A Transcription of the Lady Bindloss Braid Manuscript

This manuscript was written prior to 1660, according to Noemi Speiser in her Old English Pattern Books for Loop Braiding, 2000, Switzerland.

The braid instructions are not numbered in the manuscript. I have numbered them for convenience. In the transcript, I have preserved spelling, crossings out and punctuation as best I could. Many times the number 'one' was dotted, including i0, i5, etc., but I have left this out.

1. One bodies worke to make thes purstrings, place :3: boes of red, one the one hand, and .2. boes of whit one the other hand and then worke throwgh dubbill boes and worke all take all under,

1. One body's work To make these pursestrings, place 3 bows of red on the one hand, and 2 bows of white on the other hand and then work through double bows and take all under.

2. One bodies worke To make thes 2 strings at one working, take 5 boes linked with red and white and plase :3 boes one the hand and .2. boes one the other hand and red up one the one hand and white up of the other. Then worke through dubbill boes thakinge the upper side of the loest - boes of bothe hands,

2. One body's work To make these 2 strings at one working, take 5 bows linked with red and white and place 3 boes on the hand and 2 boes on the other hand, with red up on the one hand and white up of the other. Then worke through double boes taking the upper side of the lowest boes of both hands,

3. One bodies worke To make a string that euery egge shall keep his collor: take 5 boes linced with red and whit and plase 3 boes on the one hand red up and 2 boes on the other whit up and worke threw dubbill boes all take all under

3. One body's work To make a string that every edge shall keep his color, take 5 bows linked with red and white and place 3 bows on the one hand red up and 2 bows on the other white up and work through double bows take all under.

4. One bodies worke To make this flat string, warpe .3. boes of red & .2. boes of white plase red one the one hand and whit one the other then worke throw dubbill boes, taking the upar sid of the boe of the left hand and the loer side of the right,

4. One body's work To make this flat string, warp 3 bows of red & 2 bows of white place red on the one hand and white on the other then work through double bows, taking the upper side of the bow of the left hand and the lower side of the right.

6. 2 bodies' work To make the double staff and chevron warp 5 bows of yellow and give [to] the receiver. Warp 5 bows of green and give [to] the other party, placing 3 bows on the out hand and two bows on the in hand of both parties alike and then work the Spanish braid, the receiver taking the private stitch, changing twice making the staff, changing once making the chevron.

7. 2 bodies worke To make the broad arrowehed, warpe .5. boes of greene and giue the .Re warpe .5. boes of yalloe and giue the other party plasing .3. boes of the out hand and .2. boes on the in hand of both parties a like then worke the spannish braid the Re taking the priuiet stich,

9. 2 bodies worke To make thes 2 together, giue to each parties - 5 boes plasing 3 one the out hand and .2. one the in hand and then worke both throw dubbill boes and take the top of the loe finger of both hands,

13. 2 bodies worke To make the stafe and .4. crouns take :10. boes linked with red and whit and giue to each party 5 boes a pees plasing 3. boes one the out hand and .2. one the in hand of both parttis a like, and red up of bouth your out hands, and whit up of both youre in hands and then worke both through dubbill boes and take all under, to make the stafe, and when you doe thinke the staf long enufe, then turn youre joyning fingers, red up, working still throw dubbill boes to make .4. Crouns, but Remember that .5 stiches madeth a Croun then worke againe as at first and thous worke continually

13. 2 bodies' work To make the staff and 4 crowns, take 10 bows linked with red and white and give to each party 5 bows apiece placing 3 bows on the out hand and 2 on the in hand of both parties alike, and red up on both your out hands, and white up on both your in hands and then work both through double bows and take all under, to make the staff. And when you do think the staff long enough, then turn your adjoining fingers, red up, working still through double bows to make 4 crowns, but remember that 5 stitches made a crown. Then work again as at first and thus work continually.

14. 2 bodis worke To make thes 2 strings to gether warpe .6. boes of red and 4 of yalloe and plase 3. boes one the out hand, and 2. boes of yallow one the in hand of both parties a like and then worke throwgh dubbill boes and take the top of the loe finger of all hands

17. 3 bodies worke To make the french string, warpe :10: boes of blue or red and giue to ether party .5. boes, plasing .3. boes on the out hand and .2. boes on the in hand of both parties a like then warpe .2. boes of siluer and giue the middell worker, then lett the 2 out workers worke both through dubble boes and take all under and the middell worker to passe with the on boe through the other euery chang, after thay haufe pased throagh with the siluer bes thay must hold them on up till the red canges with on a nother

17. 3 bodies' work To make the French string, warp 10 bows of blue or red and give to either party 5 bows, placing 3 bows on the out hand and 2 bows on the in hand of both parties alike. Then warp 2 bows of silver and give [to] the middle worker. Then let the 2 out workers work both through double bows and take all under and the middle worker to pass with the one bow through the other every change. After they have passed through with the silver boes thay must hold them on up until the red changes with one another.

18. 2 bodies worke To make this poynt, warpe :5. boes of red and giue the Re warpe .3. boes of whit and 2 of blue and giue the other party plasing .3. boes one the out hand and to one the in hand of both parties a like and then worke both throw dubbill boes and take the top of the loe finger of both hands sauing the priuet stich which is the loe side of the in hand of the re,

Warp 3 bows of white and 2 of blue and give [to] the other party, placing 3 bows on the out hand and two on the in hand of both parties alike and then work both through double bows and take the top of the low finger of both hands saving the private stitch which is the low side of the in hand of the receiver.

24. 1 bodes worke To make the Spannish braid one bodis worke take .5. boes of what colors you like but this is .2. boes of blue and .3. of whit you must plase the :3: whit one the right hand and the .2. blue one the left hand you must laye the bottom boe on youre Right hand on the bottom boe one youre left hand and pul it through with the middell fingor of youre left hand then you must put that finger throw the middell boe one the Right hand and take the uppor sid of the uppor boe and pul it throue ne youre finger whict is- caled the priuet stich, then you must laye the bottom boe one the Right hand Left hand one the bottom boe one the Right hand and pull it throue with you middell fingor one the right hand thenn put the loar finger but one through of the right hand through the middell boe of the left hand and take the loar sid of the uppor boe and pul it throue and one stich is don soe worke one,

24. 1 body's work To make the Spanish braid, one body's work, take 5 bows of whatever colors you like but this is 2 bows of blue and 3 of white. You must place the 3 [of] white on the right hand and the 2 [of] blue on the left hand you must lay the bottom bow on your right hand on the bottom bow on your left hand and pull it through with the middle finger of your left hand. Then you must put that finger through the middle bow on the right hand and take the upper side of the upper bow and pull it through on your finger (which is called the private stitch.) Then you must lay the bottom bow on the left hand onto the bottom bow on the right hand and pull it through with your middle finger on the right hand. Then put the lower finger but one of the right hand through the middle bow of the left hand and take the lower side of the upper bow and pull it through and one stich is done, so work on,

That a tho ther sid is the way to worke all the Spannish brayds but the left hand worker must not take the priuet stich but the loe sid of that be whare the priuet stich is taken and when thay chang thay must take throu onanother boes and the uppar boes

That another side is the way to work all the Spanish braids but the left hand worker must not take the private stich but the low side of that is where the private stich is taken and when they change they must take through one another's bows and the upper bows

25. 1 bodis worke The Spannish braid wrought by one body take fiufe boes of aney colors you like but this is .3. of whit and twoe of blue, the thre whit of the Right hand and towof blue one the left hand, you must laye the botom boe of youre Right hand one the bottom boe of your left hand and pull the bottom boe of youre left hand throue with the middell fingor of youre left hand, then you must put the upparmost middel fingor of youre left hand througe the middill boe one the Right hand and take the uppar sid of the upor boe and pull it throue, one the uppar middell fingor of the left hand which i coled the priuet stich then you must laye the loarmost boe one the left hand and pull a pone the loar boe one the right hand and pull it throue with youre middell fingor, then you must put your uppar finger middel fin one the Right hand ant throughe the middell boe one the left hand and take the loar sid of the uppar boe and pull it throw this is not write

25. 1 body's work The Spanish braid made by one body: Take five bows of any colors you like, but this is 3 of white and two of blue, the three white on the right hand and two of blue on the left hand. You must lay the bottom bow of your right hand on the bottom bow of your left hand and pull the bottom bow of your left hand through with the middle finger of your left hand. Then you must put the middle finger of your left hand through the middle bow on the right hand and take the upper side of the upper bow and pull it through, onto the middle finger of the left hand (which I called the private stitch.) Then you must lay the lowermost bow on the left hand upon the lower bow on the right hand and pull it through with your middle finger, then you must put your upper middle finger on the right hand through the middle bow on the left hand and take the lower side of the upper bow and pull it through this is not write [=white?]

26. To make a braid of :40: bobbins

(I omit this set of instructions since it is not a fingerloop braid. Plus, the handwriting was close to illegible, sorry!)

27. One bodies worke To make this shaded brad of one bodies worke take .5. boes linked with green and whit .3. boes one the out hand and 2 of the left hand whith whit uppormost but the 3 one the right hand mus haufe green uppormost and the other two must be whit uppormost then- worke the Spannish braid and take the priuet stich of the uppormost boe one the right hand and the uppor sid of the boe and still torne the next boe green uppormost and soe worke on

27. One body's work To make this shaded braid of one body's work, take 5 bows linked with green and white, 3 bows on the out hand and 2 on the left hand with white uppermost but the 3 on the right hand must have green uppermost and the other two must be white uppermost. Then work the Spanish braid and take the private stitch of the uppermost bow on the right hand and the upper side of the bow, and still turn the next bow green uppermost and so work on.

28. 2 bodeys worke Take .5. boes of red linked with whit and 5 boes of green linked with whit giufe her one the left hand the 5 boes with Red linked with whot the whits upparmost and shee on the Right hand must haufe the grene and whit the reds and whits mus haufe 3 poes one out hand and to boes one the in hand and the green and whit must haufe 2 boe on the in hand greens up and 3 one the out hand 2 whit up and the upparmost boe mus be green up both working the Spannish prad the Right hand worker taking the priuat stich of the uppor boe of the right hand and the uppar sid of it the you must turne green uppormost of the next boe and then end your stich and shange twis throue the uppormost boes with the left hand worker the right hand worker taking the uppar sid the other the loar sid

28. 2 bodies' work Take 5 bows of red linked with white and 5 bows of green linked with white give her on the left hand the 5 bows with red linked with white the whites uppermost and she on the right hand must hauve the green and white. The reds and whites must have 3 bows on [the] out hand and two bows on the in hand and the green and white must have 2 bows on the in hand greens up and 3 on the out hand 2 whites up and the uppermost bow must be green up both working the Spanish braid the right hand worker taking the private stich of the upper bow of the right hand and the upper side of it the you must turn green uppermost of the next bow and then end your stich and change twice through the uppermost bows with the left hand worker the right hand worker taking the upper side, the other the lower side

29. To make the Cattorn whele braid which is the worke of 3 parssons Take 15 boes of :3: collors 5 of a collor let them that stands one the right hand worke throw tow taking allwaies the uppar sid of the undor boe, and thay that are one the left hand must take from the left hand must take from the left hand the upper side of the undor boe and from the right hand the undor sid of the undor bow and thay in the middill working allwaies throw taking the uppar sid of both hands of the under boe still changing euery sid till thay in the middell haue the colors of them one the right hand,

29. To make the Catherine wheel braid which is the work of 3 persons, Take 15 bows of 3 colors, 5 of a color. Let them that stands on the right hand work through two taking always the upper side of the under bow, and they that are on the left hand must take from the left hand the upper side of the under bow and from the right hand the under side of the under bow and they in the middle working always through taking the upper side of both hands of the under bow still changing every side till they in the middle have the colors of them on the right hand,

30. 2 bodies worke To make the drume poynt take :10 boes linked with red and whit and giue to each party 5 boes a pees plasing .3. boes one the out hand and 2 one the in hand of both parties alike and then worke the Spannish braid the Re taking the priuet stich but when you begin plas red up of all hands,

30. 2 bodies' work To make the drum point, take 10 bows linked with red and white and give to each party 5 bows apiece, placing 3 bows on the out hand and 2 on the in hand of both parties alike and then work the Spanish braid the receiver taking the private stitch, but when you begin, place red up on all hands.

31. 3 bodies worke To make the Cicolor shaded brayd which is of .15. boes, 5. boes of a darke skiecollor linked with white, and :5: boes of a liter skecoler linked with a litter: and .5. bees of skicollor not linked a litter liter then the last darke skicoler, let them one the left hand take the .5. bees linked with the darkes skicoler and whit and the middell the .5. boes linked with to liter skicollors and them one the right- hand the other :5 boes all of a liter ski color then the darker of the middell worker and all worke the Spannish braid the right hand taking the priuet stich and the other ta?? then chang the upar boe twise [thrise??] taking the loar sid with the middell worker and the middell worker must chang the upar boe with the left- hand wo??? [worker or woman] taking the undor sid of the boe and if it be right euery one keeps to thare one Collors and the prayd opens on one sid and spreds a broad the light Collors must be uppermast of all hands and you must take the uppar sid of the boe and take boes throue twis and the other worker must take the loar sid and thay will be all of a color in euery ons hands as thay begon.

31. 3 bodies' work To make the sky-colored, shaded braid, which is of 15 bows, 5 bows of a dark sky color linked with white, and 5 bows of a lighter sky color linked with a lighter, and 5 bows of sky color not linked [with] a lighter, then the last dark sky color. Let them on the left hand take the 5 bows linked with the darkest sky color and white, and the middle the 5 bows linked with two lighter sky colors, and them on the right hand, the other 5 bows all of a lighter sky color then the darker of the middle worker and all work the Spanish braid the right hand taking the private stich and then change the upper bowe twice [thrice??] taking the lower side with the middle worker and the middle worker must change the upper bow with the left- hand wo??? [worker? or woman?] taking the under side of the bow and if it be right every one keeps to their own colors and the braid opens on one side and spreads abroad. The light Colors must be uppermost of all hands and you must take the upper side of the bow and take bows through twice and the other worker must take the lower side and they will be all of a color in every one's hands as they begin.

32. 4 bodies worke To make a brayd of to shades take :5: boes of a darke pinke color linked with whit and :5: boes of a littell liter pinke color linked with a pale skiecolors and :5: boes a liter pinke color linked with a lit skicolor, and :5. boes of darke skicolor linked whith whit, all the lit skicolors and whits are upparmist, but the upparmast boe of the Right hand of the right hand worker must haufe the darke color upparmist and then all worke the Spannish brayd the Right hand worker taking the priuet stich and all Changing the upparmast boe twise and taking the loar sid and if it be right eueru worker will haufe thare one Collors thay began with and the brayd opens in the working when you change youre poes you must Chan Change througe the boes twise and the one must take the upparsid of the poe and the other sid mist take the undor sid and thay will haufe theare one Collors you must remember that the the Right hand worker after thay haufe taken the priuet stich must still change dee darke Collor upparmos of the upparmost boe of the right hand

32. 4 bodies' work To make a braid of two shades, take 5 bows of a dark pink color linked with white and 5 bows of a little lighter pink color linked with a pale sky color and 5 bows a lighter pink color linked with a light sky color, and 5 bows of dark sky color linked with white. All the light sky colors and whites are uppermost, but the uppermost bow of the right hand of the right hand worker must have the dark color uppermost and then all work the Spanish braid, the right hand worker taking the private stich and all changing the uppermost bow twice and taking the lower side and if it is right every worker will have their own colors they began with and the braid opens in the working. When you change youre bows you must change through the bows twice and the one must take the upperside of the bow and the other side must take the under side and they will have their own colors. You must remember that the Right hand worker after thay have taken the private stich must still change tre dark color uppermost of the uppermost bow of the right hand

33. 5 bodes worke To make a brayd of :20: boes take .5. boes of darke skie color linked whith whit and .5 boes of a light greene linked with a pale scicolor then take .5. boes of a darker green and linke them with whit and .5. boes of a darke red and linke them with whit and .5. boes of a liter red and linke them with a pallor red then euery one must take thare colors loar hand must take the darke skicolors the next the pale grens and the next the darke greens the next the darke reds and the uparmost the pale reds all working the Spannish braid and the- upormast worker must take the priuet stich and one the right hand and then turne of the upparmost boe and turne the darke Collor of the boe next boe upparmost all the while thay worke euery one Changing twise throw thare uppormos boe and the furst must take the uppar sid of the boe as thay chang and the other must take the loar sid and thay will haufe thare one Colors as thay begoon,you must plas the whit upparmat that is linked with the darke skicollor, next the light green uppormost

33. 5 bodies' work To make a braid of 20 [should be 25?] bows, take 5 bows of dark sky color linked with white and 5 bows of a light green linked with a pale sky color. Then take 5 bows of a darker green and link them with white and 5 bows of a dark red and link them with white and 5 bows of a lighter red and link them with a paler red. Then everyone must take their colors. Lower hand must take the dark sky colors, the next the pale greens and the next the dark greens, the next the dark reds and the uppermost, the pale reds -- all working the Spanish braid and the uppermost worker must take the private stich on the right hand of the uppermost bow and turn the dark color of the next bow uppermost all the while they work every one changing twice through their uppermost bow and the first must take the upper side of the bow as they change and the other must take the lower side and they will have their own colors as they began, you must place the white uppermost that is linked with the dark sky color, next the light green uppermost

next the ??????????? ??rke(darke) green uppor most, next the whit uppormast that is linked with darke red next yoare ple reds must be uppor most all but the uppor most boe of the Right hand worker and that must haufe the darke collor all ways uppormost- thus you must plase youre boes when you begin,

next the ??rke [dark?] green upper most, next the white uppermost that is linked with dark red next your pale reds must be uppermost, all but the uppermost bow of the right hand worker, and that must have the dark color allways uppermost. Thus you must place your bows when you begin.
