New Skill: Linked or Departed Bowes

Some braids call for bicolored bowes: one color on the top strand and another on the bottom. There are several methods to make these linked bowes.

Method 1

For each single linked bowe, make 2 bowes of different colors. For example: using green and white for a 5 bowe braid, you will need 5 green bowes and 5 white bowes. Note: in method 1 each linked bowe is twice as thick as normal bowes.

  1. Make and knot all bowes together as usual.
  2. Put one bowe of each color (a green and a white) on an index finger, one bowe above the other
  3. With your other hand, reach through the top bowe and take the bottom strand of the bottom bowe through the top bowe. You should now see the 2 bowes cross each other.
  4. Fold that bottom strand of the bottom bowe around the top bowe.
  5. Pull both strands of the top bowe away from the bottom bowe.
  6. Grab the bowes at their crossing and then loop them onto your finger. The top strand should be one color and the bottom strand the other color.

Method 2

For each single, linked bowe, cut 2 half-length bowes, one of one color and the other of another color. For example, if you want a 6 inch braid, cut 2 half-bowes of 9 inches (6 inches plus 3 inches).

  1. Knot the bottoms of the 2 halves to make a bowe with a knot at the bottom.
  2. Knot all bowes together at the loose ends as usual. You will have knots at your fingers if you use this method.

5. A lace baston -- c. 1475

Also 'a string that every edge shall keepe his collor' -- c. 1600

Appearance

This is a square braid with red and white stripes running down its length.

Translation

To make a string that every edge shall keep his color, take 5 bowes linked with red and white, and place 3 bowes on the one hand red up and 2 bowes on the other hand white up and work through double bowes and take all under. (ZKW)

Directions

Prepare 5 linked bowes. Place 1 bowe each on BCR with white up on top strand and 1 bowe each on ABCL with red up.

New Skill: The Lateral Exchange Move

Lateral Exchange

This direction is used to swap one bowe through the other on opposite hands. The direction may state: AR change with AL.

To do this UNREVersed:

  1. Place finger AL through the bowe on finger AR.
  2. Remove finger AR from the bowes so AL has two bowes, .
  3. AR takes the back bowe over the front bowe on AL. (The starting AL bowe in (a) is now AR; the starting AR bowe is now AL.)
  4. As stated above, let your thumbs help to take bowes.

To do this REVersed:

  1. Place finger AL through the bowe on finger AR.
  2. Remove finger AR from the bowes so AL has two bowes.
  3. AR takes the top bowe on AL, flipping it 180 degrees.

6. A grene dorge of vj bowes -- c. 1475

Appearance

If you use brown as the main color, and green and yellow, you get a thick, flat braid with brown stripes running down the sides, and green and yellow alternating stripes in the center of the braid.

New Skill: 2 Bowes on One Finger

It is possible for a single braider to manage more than one bowe on each finger. The finger creases must be called into play. The top crease is the crease closest to the tip of the finger. The middle crease is the one next to it. The bottom finger crease is at the base of the finger near the palm and is not used here.

It is important to maintain the order of the bowes by nesting them carefully in these creases. This is an advanced technique that requires care and concentration. The work will not go as fast as a simple braid, but the complexity of the braids is rewarding.

New Skill: Two and Three Workers

Wider braids can be made by joining forces with other braiders to increase the number of available bowes for a single braid. We have included a few of the simpler forms of multiple braider laces.

Note: each braider must periodically trade bowes with the braider next to them to form one single braid. In these examples Zoe found that using the ring finger as the pickup/transfer finger worked more easily than using the index finger, as in most of the c. 1475 braid instructions.

Braids #20 through #22 do not require advanced braiding skills. It is important, however, to thoroughly understand moving a bowe reversed and unreversed. If you need to pick up a bowe from the other braiders hand reversed, you will have to use whatever finger "grab" that will result in the top of the bowe becoming the bottom of the bowe after it is moved to the other braider's finger, as per the instructions.

The braid directions are the same for both the edge and the crowns. Follow Moves ONE to THREE b of braid 19 (FF12). (ZKW)

New Skill: 3 Workers

It is possible to make even wider braids with more people, as long as they trade bowes at certain points with braiders next to them. We include one of the more-than-two-braid patterns. There are instructions for even more than three workers on a single braid in the old braiding manuals.

23. the Katheren wheele -- c. 1630

Note: This braid is one of the few open, lacy ones (including braids 3 (MS6) & 7 (C19)) that we have found.

If three workers with basic skills are gathered together, it is possible to work this remarkable braid. Each braider will start their own color. One worker will be making a braid that is joined at one side and open at one side, i.e. it will look "folded" as it is made. Two other workers will be making two narrow braids at once, one on top of the other. As the braid is made it looks like it is only half as wide as it will be when opened out at the end. At the same time, the braiders are occasionally exchanging colors. At certain portions of the braid, only two braiders are working independently to lengthen their sections of the braid before beginning a color-trading set of moves. This braid will not tolerate errors! It is actually woven folded in half, so that you cannot see what you have made until you open it. One little mistake about REV or UNREV switched will ruin your braid: you will not be able to open it.

Appearance

This wide, flat, lacy braid has 3 sets of interlocking chain links.
